彼が好んで滞在した「103号室」は、 江戸中期に作庭された廻遊式日本庭園を 最も近くに望むことができる場所の一つです。

名著『街道をゆく』の執筆にあたり、 司馬氏はこの部屋で何を思い、 どのような景色をその目に焼き付けたのでしょうか。

At Matsudaya Hotel, history is not just read; it is felt. The renowned Japanese author Ryotaro Shiba, a master of historical fiction, visited our inn six times, with his final stay in 1989.

His favorite retreat was Room 103.

From this room, one can gaze upon our strolling garden, a National Registered Monument created in the mid-Edo period. It is one of the closest vantage points to the garden’s tranquil beauty.

While writing his masterpiece Kaido wo Yuku (On the Highways), what thoughts crossed Shiba’s mind as he took in this very scenery?

The main building, constructed in the elegant Taisho-era Sukiya style, still carries the whispers of the past. Within its profound silence, you might hear the echoes of the patriots who changed the course of Japan’s history.
