国際交流員のジャスティンが毎月、お昼休みに行っている職員向け英会話レッスンも、始めて1年4ヶ月となりました🔠🧑‍🏫✨

毎月、違ったテーマで英会話の練習をしていますが、今月の開催は12月24日（クリスマスイブ❣️）ということで、アメリカ式のプレゼント交換「White Elephant」に挑戦しました🎅🥳

参加者はそれぞれ事前にプレゼントを用意し（最低金額と最高金額を決めておくのが一般的）、中身がわからないようにラッピングして、テーブルの真ん中などにプレゼントを置きます🎁 ジャスティンが参加者の名前を紙に書き、サンタ帽から引き、名前を呼ばれた人がプレゼントを選び、みんなの前で開けます😮 その後、開けたプレゼントをもらいます。ただし、新しいプレゼントを選ぶ代わりに、すでに開けられたプレゼントが欲しい場合は、それを盗むことができます😎プレゼントを盗まれた人は、その後新しいプレゼントを選ぶか、他の人から盗むことができます。今回は、プレゼントが盗まれることが2回ありました😆

日本のプレゼント交換とは一味違う、ドキドキ感で盛り上がりました👏

ちなみに、"White Elephant "は、"捨てにくい非実用的なプレゼント"や "維持するのが難しいプレゼント"を意味する慣用句です。だから、このプレゼント交換では、面白いまたは興味深いプレゼントが人気です🤭🐘

It has been a year and 4 months since Justin, our CIR, started his monthly English conversation group for staff members during lunch break 🔠🧑‍🏫✨

Every month, Justin picks a different theme for the English conversation, and this month's conversation was held on December 24th (Christmas Eve❣️), so we tried a gift exchange popular in America called a "White Elephant" 🎅🥳

Each participant prepares gift in advance (a minimum and maximum spending limit is usually set), wraps it so that the contents are not revealed, and places their gift in the middle of a table, etc. 🎁 Justin wrote the participants' names on pieces of paper and drew them from a Santa hat, and the person whose name was called got to choose a gift and open it in front of everyone 😮 You then keep the gift you open. However, instead of picking a new present, if you want an already-opened present, you can steal it 😎 the person whose gift was stolen can then pick a new gift or steal one from someone else. This time, we had two cases of people stealing presents 😆

It was very exciting and different from present exchanges in Japan 👏

“White Elephant" is an idiom meaning "an impractical gift that is hard to get rid of" or "difficult to maintain." So, for this gift exchange, funny or interesting gifts are popular 🤭
