Origin of the Toganuki Jizo (Thorn-Removing Jizo)

At Kōgan-ji Temple (Toganuki Jizo), you can receive an “Omikage” (beneficial talisman).

Long ago, someone had a thorn stuck in their throat. After being given the Omikage to drink, they were saved. This is the origin of the tale of thorn removal.

There is a small shrine set at the entrance of the temple gates for worship.

You can buy it there, and just to the side there is a place to light incense.

Offer incense at the large incense burner.

When you’re ready, bow and pray inside the main hall.

Inside the hall, there is a place on the right where you can place the set’s “Tōmyō” (a small lamp or candle) to illuminate your prayer.

Within the temple grounds you can also find the famous “Arai Kannon” (Washing Kannon).

Use the ladle to pour water over the statue or yourself, and use the included towel to wash away your bad parts as you pray for healing.

The Omikage mentioned at the beginning can be received inside the main hall.

The Omikage is a drawing/print of the Jizo statue on paper. You can place it on the part of your body that is afflicted, or carry it with you. (Ways to use it vary.)

If you visit Kōgan-ji, be sure to get one!
