What is "Jomon pottery"?

What did people in the Jomon period pray for and think about when they made it?

The exhibit showcases pottery figures made during the Jomon period.
Each figure has its own unique style, and although we cannot fully
understand the profound meaning behind their creation, we know that
they were made to resemble human figures.

In order not to disturb the feelings of the Jomon people as much as
possible, each creator has carefully crafted the design of "Jomon
pottery" into a form that can be used in our modern daily life.
The exhibition aims to showcase the diversity of Jomon pottery beyond
the popular and well known pottery figures.

「土偶」ってなんなのでしょう？

縄文時代の人たちが、
何を祈り、何を考えて作ったのか。

色々と妄想することはできますが、
わたしたちのような縄文ファンや、
考古学者にだって深い意味を知ることはできません。

確かなことは、縄文時代に作られ、
人間の形に見える焼き物、ということだけ。

一見奇異に見える土偶たちですが、
それぞれに「様式」があり、
形づくるためのルールがあることがうかがえます。

突出した芸術家による作品ではなく、
日常の中にあるデザインとして受け継がれ、
変化してきたものだと言えます。

現代のわたしたちが
お地蔵さんやお札になにか願掛けをする時、
形の様式は同じでも、
人それぞれに掛ける想いは違います。

縄文人が土偶に掛ける想いも、
きっと人それぞれに違ったことでしょう。

縄文人の気持ちをなるべく邪魔しないよう、
そっと気をつけて、クリエイターそれぞれが
「土偶」のデザインを現代の日常で
普段使いできる形に仕上げました。

土偶といえば遮光器土偶ばかりが注目されがちですが、
アイテムを通して土偶の多様性に気づく入り口となれば
幸いです ☺︎
