由比ガ浜から鶴岡八幡宮に向かって延びる、鶴岡八幡宮の参道です。

鎌倉は、政権所在地となって以降、急速に都市整備が進められました。
その手始めとして行われたのが、政権の守護神鶴岡八幡宮と、その参道の若宮大路の建設でした。

以来、今日にいたるまで、若宮大路はまちの基軸として位置づけられてきました。

鎌倉幕府が栄えたころは、道の両側にはたくさんの武将の屋敷があったといわれます。
