#法華堂跡（源頼朝墓・北条義時墓）

鎌倉幕府の創始者である源頼朝と第２代執権北条義時の供養のための堂（法華堂）跡を中心とした史跡です。

法華堂とは、武家がその祖先をまつるために法華経にちなんで建てるお堂です。

始まりは、1189（文治5）年に頼朝が聖観音像を本尊として建てた持仏堂（念持仏または祖先の位牌を安置する堂）と考えられています。

頼朝は1199（正治元）年に落馬が原因で53歳で亡くなりますが、その後、この持仏堂で供養が行われたと考えられ、持仏堂は「法華堂」と呼ばれるようになったとされています。

#RemainsofHokkedoTemple : Tomb of Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hojo Yoshitoki

The site is centered on the ruins of a hall, Hokkedo, dedicated to the memorial service for the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate, Minamoto no Yoritomo, and the second regent, Hojo no Yoshitoki.

Hokkedo is a hall built by samurai families in honour of their ancestors and it is associated with the Lotus Sutra.

It is thought to have started as a temple called Jibutsudo built by Yoritomo in 1189 (12th century) with a statue of the Holy Kannon as its principal object of worship.

Yoritomo died in 1199 (12th century) at the age of 53 as a result of a horse fall.
It is thought that his memorial services were held in the Jibutsudo afterwards, and that is why
Jibutsudo is said to have come to be called Hokkedo.
