菖蒲は香りが強いため、邪気を祓うとされており、古代中国の厄払い行事であった「端午の節句」に使用されていました。菖蒲湯に入るのは、体を労わりながら厄除けをするという意味が込められているのが理由と言われています。

Because of its strong fragrance, iris is believed to cleanse the body of evil spirits and was used in the "Dragon Boat Festival," an ancient Chinese event to ward off evil spirits. It is said that the reason people take iru baths is to exorcise evil spirits while working on the body.
