‘Dondoyaki’🔥is a traditional event in which people burn their New Year decorations in hope of a disease- and disaster-free new year.
‘Yagura’, a huge conical (approx 12m high and 7m in diameter) tower built with green bamboo, Japanese cedar, straw and reeds, is assembled by local citizens a day or two prior to the event.
On the morning of lighting, local people gather and pray for happiness in the new year in front of the Yagura tower where the god is enshrined.
The tower is ignited exactly at 8:00 am and burned down in about three minutes with the sound of popping bamboo, and the people who gathered enjoy eating grilled rice cakes.
It is believed that you will stay healthy throughout the year without catching a cold if you eat Mochi or rice cakes grilled in the embers.
Some people hung many rice cakes on their bamboo sticks!
This year there will be 2 chances to see the event!
