November 17th and 29th will be the next opportunities in Okunitama-jinja Shrine in Fuchu when we can enjoy a traditional Japanese festival Tori-no-Ichi Fair (Festival of the Rooster).
Festivals in Fuchu are a representation of local art and folklore, and they are accompanied by drinks, festivities, and fantastic food, making them one of the most direct connections with traditional Japanese culture, history, and religion.
Tori-no-Ichi Fair (Festival of the Rooster) is held every November on the days of the rooster of the Chinese calendar, every 12 days, therefore it is held at least twice every year, depending on the year.
This yearly tradition has been going on since the Edo period, about 300 years ago.
It is said to have started as the autumn harvest festival, and it gradually changed to a festival wishing for prosperous business and good luck for next year.
Farming utensils used to be sold at this fair.
As years went by, sellers started decorating them with lucky charms.
Nowadays you will stalls selling “Kumade”, a decorated bamboo rake that will help people 'rake in' wealth and good fortune.
Tradition says that each year you should get a slightly bigger, slightly more expensive rake because the bigger the rake, the more fortune it will bring.

毎年11月5日、１７日、29日、府中の大國魂神社で酉の市が開催されます。
酉の市は江戸時代から続きます。
起源は諸説ありますが、秋の収穫祭が発祥と言われ、来年の商売繁盛や開運招福を願うお祭りへと変化していくなかで、もともと市の一角で農具として売られていた熊手が、いつの間にか縁起物として担がれるようになりました。
熊手には、その形が鷲が獲物を掴んでいる様子に似ているため「福を掴んで離さない」という意味や、落ち葉などを集めることから「福をかき集める」という意味があるそうです。
また、時代とともに様々な縁起物も飾り付けられるようになりました。この飾りは指物 (さしもの) と呼ばれ、それぞれに洒落た願いが込められています。
熊手は年々大きいものに買い替えていくのが良いと言われています。
