Every year on July 20th at Okunitama-jinja Shrine we have Sumomo Matsuri (Plum Festival).
“Karasu uchiwa” (crow fans) are sold to keep away evil spirits and fields bug-free and ensure good harvest (this year on both days, July 20-21)
The legend goes that the festival originated in the 11th century when Japanese Imperial clan leader Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and his son stopped at Okunitama-jinja Shrine to ask the gods to grant them victory in battle. As an offering Minamoto presented plums.
From that moment each year on July 20th, the Japanese plum gets its moment in the spotlight!

毎年7月20日、府中の大國魂神社では、すもも祭が開催されます。
今年は20日~21日に五穀豊穣・悪疫防除・厄除の信仰をもつ「からす団扇」の頒布のみ行われます。
祭の起源は、源頼義・義家父子が、大國魂神社に戦勝祈願をし、戦に勝利した凱旋の帰途で、すももを供えたことに由来します。それ以来、境内にすもも市がたつようになったことで、毎年7月20日のすもも祭は夏の風物詩となりました。
