On February 3 (Tuesday), Setsubun Bean-Throwing Festival will be held on the premises of Okunitama-jinja Shrine in Fuchu.
Setsubun literally means: seasonal division, and it indicates the day before the first day of spring based on Japanese old lunar calendar.
It’s a chance to get rid of evil spirits and bring good fortune using roasted soybeans known as ‘fukumame’ (fortune beans).
The bean-throwing ceremony will be held at 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00, and entertainers, athletes and mascot characters from Fuchu will pray for good fortune and throw small plastic bags of beans with the shout “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (“Devils out, happiness in!”)
At the 6:00pm ceremony, Japanese-Filipino Takayasu Akira, whose highest sumo rank has been ōzeki, will throw beans and many worshipers will gather on the premises to cheer.
Remember to pick up and eat the number of beans which corresponds to your age plus one more for good measure to symbolize good health in the new year!

無病息災をもたらし、邪気を追い払うチャンスです。
そして、鬼(邪気)は何を最も恐れているか知っていますか？
もちろん、福豆として知られる炒り大豆です！
豆まき式は、午後2時、4時、6時に行われ、芸能人やスポーツ選手、府中市のマスコットキャラクターたちが、「福は内」の掛け声とともに、福を祈願し豆をまきます。
午後6時の豆まき式では、最高位は東大関 高安関が豆をまき、境内に集まった多くの参拝客から歓声があがります。
新しい年を健康に過ごすために、あなたの年齢に加えてもう1つ福豆を食べてください！ ✨
