Yakatabune started as a boating activity for aristocrats in the Heian period (794-1185) and became more popular during the Edo period (1603-1868) when they were embellished with sparkling decor by wealthy merchants and powerful feudal lords.

Later, the yakatabune was transformed into something that could be enjoyed by the public as well. Today, a new type of yakatabune that combines tradition with modernity has appeared, attracting many to experience this historical part of Japanese culture.
