Celebrating the 140th anniversary of his birth this year, the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum is holding an exhibition tracing the footsteps of Takehisa Yumeji, a painter mainly active from the 1910s to 1930s.
Born in Okayama Prefecture in 1884, Yumeji established his style of painting without formal art education. His lyrical paintings of beautiful women, known as “Yumeji-style beauties”, earned great popularity. He was also a pioneer as a graphic designer, designing book and magazine covers as well as clothing and everyday objects in his pursuit of beauty in daily life.
This exhibition commemorates the 140th anniversary of Yumeji’s birth and traces his life from a new perspective, based on the most recent research. Yumeji was a key figure during the first half of the twentieth century when values were changing dramatically in many ways throughout the world.

今年生誕140周年を迎え、大正時代から昭和初期にかけて活躍した画家・竹久夢二の足跡をたどる展覧会が、東京都庭園美術館にて開催されています。
1884年、岡山県に生まれた夢二は、正規の美術教育を受けることなく独学で自身の画風を確立し、「夢二式」と称される叙情的な美人画によって人気を博しました。
また画家としての活動だけではなく、グラフィックデザイナーの草分けとしても活躍し、本や雑誌の装丁、衣服や雑貨などのデザインを手がけ、暮らしの中の美を追い求めました。
近代社会の到来により、世の中のさまざまな価値観が劇的に変化しつつあった20世紀前半、時代の立役者として数々の作品を残した夢二の世界を大いに堪能できる企画展です。
