The name of the intersection, Fudanotsuji, has been the same since the Edo period (1603-1867). The intersection used to be a place where the shogunate and lords would hang up wooden placards called “fuda”, informing the public of rules and prohibitions. “Tsuji” means crossing in Japanese, making it easy to understand a little of this modern, bustling intersection’s history.
