How often do you look up at the ceiling?
If you take a moment to look at the ceiling, you may discover something new about its architectural charm.
Tokyo National Museum in Ueno is the museum with the longest history in Japan, with over 150 years of history since its establishment in 1872. The main building opened in 1938 and is characterised by its "Imperial Crown Style", which is identified by Japanese-style roofing on top of Neoclassical-style buildings. It was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2001.
The large staircase leading from the entrance of the main building to the second floor is a symbolic spot in the museum and has been used as a location for many films and TV shows. The atrium above the staircase has a coffered ceiling, the type of which is often seen in temple halls.

建物の天井を見上げてみたことはありますか？
少し意識をして天井の造形を見てみると、その建築の魅力を新しく発見できるかもしれません。
東京・上野の「東京国立博物館」は、1872年の設立以来150年以上の歴史を持つ、日本で最も長い歴史を誇る博物館です。1938年に開館した本館は、鉄筋コンクリート造の洋風建築に瓦屋根を載せた「帝冠様式」が特徴的で、2001年には国の重要文化財にも指定されました。
本館のエントランスから2階へと続く大階段は、館内を象徴する場所としてテレビドラマなど数々の映像作品のロケ地としても利用されています。また、階段上の吹き抜け部分は、寺院のお堂などでよくみられるような格天井となっています。
今後も、見上げることから都内の建築をご紹介する「If you look up」シリーズをお届けしていきます。ぜひご期待ください。
