How often do you look up at the ceiling?
If you take a moment to look at the ceiling, you may discover something new about its architectural charm.
Kyu Ogasawara Tei (ogasawarahakushakutei ) in Shinjuku Ward was built in 1927 as the residence of Count Nagayoshi Ogasawara, a member of one of Japan’s most influential samurai families.
It was designed by the Sone Chujo Architectural Office, a private design firm active before World War II. The building is said to be a rare example in Japan of Spanish architecture with a high degree of perfection ✨
The highlight of the pavilion is the Islamic-style smoking room, with its dense, ornate decoration. The plaster-carved and painted walls and marble columns and floors are as beautiful as they were in the past. Today, Kyu Ogasawara Tei houses a restaurant and can also be rented for weddings and private parties.

建物の天井を見上げてみたことはありますか？
少し意識をして天井の造形を見てみると、その建築の魅力を新しく発見できるもしれません。
新宿区にある「旧小笠原邸」( ogasawarahakushakutei )は、武家の出身である小笠原長幹伯爵の邸宅として1927年（昭和2年）に建てられました。
設計を手がけたのは、民間設計事務所・曾禰中條建築事務所で、日本に希少な完成度の高いスパニッシュ建築と言われています。
この館の最大の見せ場はイスラム風喫煙室の濃密華麗な装飾✨漆喰彫刻に彩色を施した壁面や、大理石の柱や床も、往時のままの美しさを誇っています。
現在、旧小笠原邸はレストランとして営業されており、ウエディングスペースとしても利用することができます。
今後も、見上げることから都内の建築をご紹介する「If you look up」シリーズをお届けしていきます。ぜひご期待ください。
