How often do you look up at the ceiling?
The main branch of Mitsukoshi Department Store in Nihonbashi boasts a Renaissance-style majesty. Completed in 1914, the main building was expanded and renovated in 1935 and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.
The beautiful central hall, with its illuminated ceiling covered with French red spotted marble and Italian egg-yellow marble, houses a magnificent statue of a celestial maiden ✨
This statue is also known as the "Magokoro Statue" as it symbolically expresses Mitsukoshi's foundational philosophy of magokoro, or sincerity, to its customers.
We will continue to introduce the "If you look up" series, which introduces architecture in Tokyo from the perspective of looking up. Please look forward to more!
建物の天井を見上げてみたことはありますか？
少し意識をして天井の造形を見てみると、その建築の魅力を新しく発見できるもしれません。
今回訪れたのは、ルネッサンス様式の威容を誇る日本橋三越本店。
1914年に完成した本館は、1935年に増築改修され、国の重要文化財に指定されています。
採光天井の下にフランス産赤斑大理石とイタリア産卵黄色大理石を張りつめた美しい中央ホールには、壮大な天女の像があります✨
この像は、三越のお客様に対する基本理念「まごころ」をシンボリックに表現する像として「まごころ像」ともいわれ、日本橋三越本店を象徴存在です。
今後も、見上げることから都内の建築をご紹介する「If you look up」シリーズをお届けしていきます。ぜひご期待ください。
